Asher Surgery Update–Day #1

 

 

         Asher at 6am ready for the big day.

 

 

 

 

Bottom line:

The little man came through surgery just fine with no “surprises” with what they found on the inside!!!

Next Step:

They tell us the “easy part” is over; the hard part is just beginning. Asher will be in the ICU for the next 3 days or so as his body recovers and heals. He will slowly be weaned off of the breathing machine and pain meds. How his body reacts to all of that change will determine how he is really doing. Assuming he reacts well to all that, he’ll be moved to a regular room where he’ll have to learn to nurse again just like a newborn. We’re looking at a possible 10-day stay if all goes well from here.

What we’re thankful for tonight:

First and foremost, your prayers! The gave us strength to let go; 1) literally, we let go of our son when the doctors came to get him prepped for surgery, 2) figuratively, we were able to let go of our worry and anxiety while he was in surgery for 5+ hours with his little heart in someone’s hand.

Secondly, we’re thankful that he dodged many potential risks today. All of the risk factors that they told us to watch out for have seemingly been overcome by Asher’s body. His heart has regained proper rhythm without the need for a pacemaker, and his blood pressure looks great (meaning there isn’t significant internal bleeding).

Thirdly, we’re just thankful for the body of Christ in general. We could name names for 7 more hours and still not get to everyone who prayed, texted, emailed / facebook-ed, etc. It was so encouraging to see it all unfold. We’re also thankful for our friends and fellow CCC staff here in Chapel Hill who have gone out of their way to make us feel at home (literally at home in their own home). Thanks Hugh & Julie. Oh and a great big thanks to our CCC staff friends in Raleigh who braved a “snow day” while adding our son to their already full “pond” of kiddos. Thanks to the Bass’ for taking care of Brennan.

Lastly, thanks for our parents, siblings, and grandparents who braved the ice getting to the hospital only to have to brave the waiting room while waiting to hear from us. The hugs and kisses were needed as were the smiles and company at dinner.

We’ll we’ve been up since 3 am. Time to get some much needed rest! We’ll post another update tomorrow. Thanks again for your prayers and support!
