We just returned from Marty’s hometown of Hamptonville, NC where his family has their annual “chicken stew” out on the farm. Over 20 people in his extended family have birthdays and anniversaries in October (Marty’s parents just celebrated 32 years on the 7th!), so this get-together began several years ago as sort of a catch-all birthday celebration for all those folks. Anyways, they fix a HUGE pot of chicken soup over the campfire and we all sit around and eat it outside.
Asher and his great-grandmothers…he would easily fit into the big pot!
We love going back to the foothills of NC in the fall; the leaves are at their peak, college football is in full swing, college basketball is just beginning (and everyone’s respective teams are still undefeated), and the weather is perfect. This year was special as it was Asher’s first trip to the country and his first-time meeting his daddy’s side of the family: his great-grandmothers, his great-great aunt’s & uncles, his great aunt’s & uncles, and countless 1st, 2nd, and 3rd cousins. This year also marked the first year that Brennan’s generation were really old enough to play together. Here Brennan pulls off a perfect form tackle of his cousin, Brayden.
Something changes in Marty when he gets back on the farm. I guess living in the big city for so many years has taught him to suppress his “inner cowboy.” He likes to let it loose once in awhile!
Life is good, and it’s great to celebrate it with friends & family “down on the farm.”
